We are steering towards a B Corp certification

Becoming more sustainable, responsible and generally doing better is something we all strive for. However, it is not an easy journey. Once in a while there are bumps in the road, crazy turns and the risk of driving in circles. To say the least, it can be difficult to navigate and find the right path. Once in a while, however, there is a path that is so obvious to take that we must not miss the opportunity to steer onto it. One such path is B Lab's B Corp certification.

We are currently in the process of applying for this certification. But what is a B Corp certification and why do we do it?

Yes, you see. We do this because we want to be as transparent to you as possible. B Labs B Corp certification can help us become this as they measure our environmental impact, as well as our social. With a B Corp certification, it is possible for you behind the screen to see how we score on these different parameters.

In addition to being more transparent, as mentioned, we also want to make it all a little better. By getting a score set on the things we already do, we can better assess where we should use our strengths and increase efforts.

In order to become B Corp-certified at all, there are a number of requirements that we must meet. B Lab does not focus only on individual links, but instead on the entire chain. Overall, they look into five areas: Society, environment, customers, employees and administration.

Within these areas, among other things, the company's contribution to charity and good supplier relations, as well as the company's overall mission, ethics, responsibility and transparency are examined. It looks at how the company works towards a more sustainable and regenerative planet, and whether products or services are offered that support the good cause. Employee conditions are also checked, including communication, flexibility, safety and occupational health.

So it's no use just having good employee conditions. There must also be a check on energy consumption, contribution to society, materials and much more.

Our current efforts in the various areas should hopefully result in us at ELSK getting a scorer of at least 80 with them. If we don't, it is not possible to become B Corp certified unless we improve.

The B Corp certification is not a certification you just receive and then never have to think about again. It is instead a dynamic process, where B Lab checks every three years to see if the requirements are still being met or if things have improved. They make it possible for you to see if the company has improved over time, while at the same time forcing the company to keep the promise that was made to B Lab in the first place.
