What can you do ? More than you probably think. A simple example is here:
Plastic Change has made 6 simple tips that you can use when buying clothes and washing your clothes. Remember them and pass them on - It's useful info.
- Avoid buying clothes made of synthetic material: go for clothes made of wool, cotton, linen, silk, cashmere or other natural materials.
- Use liquid soap instead of washing powder: the small grains in washing powder are harder on clothes than liquid soap, and fewer fibers are therefore washed out when using liquid soap.
- Wash at a low temperature: high temperatures can damage the fibers in the clothes and can contribute to the clothes giving off fibres.
- Avoid long washes: the longer you wash, the more times the clothes rub against each other, creating friction that tears the fibers apart.
- Dry your clothes at a low spin in the dryer: high spins create friction between the clothes and result in many stray fibres.
- Fill the entire washing machine: when the machine is full of clothes, there is less friction between the pieces of clothing, and therefore the clothes do not release nearly as many fibers.
Now let's all make an effort to minimize the use of plastic and make sure that the plastic we use ends up in the right places and not out in nature.
